Michael Trainer
A life of moving private conviction into public participation.
A question, followed for decades
Michael has spent his adult life asking what moves people from private conviction into meaningful participation — what turns belief into action, and action into belonging.
Movement building
That question led him into rooms and movements built around collective participation: the Parliament of the World's Religions, malaria advocacy, Live Below the Line, and — most visibly — Global Citizen.
The Global Citizen mechanism
Global Citizen was built on a simple, radical idea: tickets to the inaugural festival could not be bought. Entry was earned through action — a petition signed, a call made, a commitment kept. Participation itself became the price of admission, and the result was a movement that generated $40+ billion in commitments from world leaders to end extreme poverty.
Hundreds of conversations
Alongside the movement work, Michael has hosted hundreds of long-form conversations — with guests spanning from Super Bowl champions to Nobel laureates, and U.S. presidents to the Dalai Lama — conversations that eventually became Resonance.
A personal threshold
A more private threshold reshaped the work: his father's illness and the experience of dementia, inheritance, and accompaniment. It moved Michael from a life organized around achievement toward one organized around presence.
The current work
Today that inquiry lives across Resonance, The Art of Human Being, and The Human Advantage — different doors into the same question about what it means to become more fully human.

None of this work is theoretical for Michael. It comes from a life spent trying to stay awake, stay connected, and stay honest about what matters — and getting it wrong plenty of times along the way.
